I met Oliver in 2015 during his interview. I was impressed with knowledge and rest is history. He was a very charming individual and world always be smiling, whatever the situation may be. Though Oliver and I never worked together in the same project, we had an excellent professional relationship. His name was Oliver Ryan. I would always call him Ryan and he would smile and say “Brijesh its Oliver, Ryan is my last name”. He never got tired of telling me that as I always kept calling him Ryan. You will be missed Oliver!

Oliver was smart, efficient, dedicated, and one of the most compassionate people I have ever encountered in my life.
Oliver and I worked together on a product, and he was the development lead. Oliver and I collaborated to set the ground rules and processes for the team to follow. I remembered the first team meeting we had with all team members who many of them were new. Oliver made sure the team were aligned. The team was one of the best ones I ever managed and worked with. Under Oliver’s leadership, the team members collaborated and worked well together, always focusing on improvement.
As a friend, he and I shared a passion for real estate investments. He often shared his wisdom in the business, and I learned a lot from him.
Oliver, I’ll miss you and our conversations. I am happy that you are in a better place. Rest in peace. Until we see each other again.

I had the pleasure of working with Oliver on a few projects. He was always a delight to work with. He was kind, helpful and generous. He was that talented, intelligent guy you wanted to have on your team. I always hoped we would get to work together again because he is just the kind of person you want on your side. His genuine heart and smile will be missed. May he rest in peace.

Oliver was a very good team member. He always approaches to me and other team members with positive body language (always with smile ). He was soo passionate about his work. Though he was handling multiple roles (Security Champion, Developer, Dev lead, Architect etc..) he never showed reluctant on performing multiple roles. He was very special team member. I was so impressed the way he decorated his cube/workspace (with all security themes).
Dear Oliver.. Take Rest buddy.. We all miss you sir….

I remember when Oliver joined the Data Guardian team way back when. He brought a lot of energy and ideas to the team. He was the young “up-and-comer” who I just knew would be a distinguished engineer at some point. I was impressed that he moved from Austin all the way up to Richardson to be with us in person. I remember he had that deep blue Ford Mustang that we would all gawk over in the parking lot at the Plano Office. He had a particular laugh about him too and was always smiling or in a good mood. Oliver had a previous life as a boxer and he and I would go down to the gym in the old Plano office and hit that 100lb bag or practice on the mitts. I’ll never forget all the camaraderie and times we got to hang out outside of the office. One of my fondest memories of Oliver (at work) was when I made a request to export our language library out so we could ensure localization changes were in the correct build before we investigate the different UIs and pop-ups. Oliver went above and beyond and did the work to export the language library to an Excel spreadsheet and publish it straight to confluence so we could pick it up. It’s simple but one of the many ways that Oliver was such an amazing team player. I will always call him a friend and it was a sad day when he told us he was moving home back to Austin. And now yet again, my heart is saddened for the loss of such a good man. He will be missed by his Dell family and the world is a little less bright without him.

I interfaced with Oliver when I was part of the server team. He sent audit events to the server as part of the data guardian team. Everyone that interfaces knows that a question from Oliver is not going to be easy. He was so very smart and hard working. As much as I liked our technical interactions, I liked the personal interactions even more. He was very kind. Which to me is learned from home. Like you, I’m a parent of a U.T. technical graduate. We know they are going to graduate very well prepared technically. And, Oliver was. However, equally impressive to me was his thoughtfulness and kindness. My heart is breaking for you. Please know that Oliver left a lasting impression on all of us that we will never forget.

I never met Oliver in person, as I was working remotely when I joined the Data Guardian team, and then he moved to Austin, but that was no obstacle at all to get to know how great a Software Engineer he was and the passion and skills he possessed. He was a Security Champion for the team, and really was a model of what a person in that role should be. A lot of his contributions are still used every day and I’m sure they will continue making an impact for many years. He was excellent at his job, always pushing the team to do better, but always with a great and positive attitude. I wish I could’ve known him better on a personal level, but the way everybody talks about him is a great testament to the great guy he was and the positive impact he had on many of us. May he rest in peace, and my deepest condolences to his family for this immeasurable loss.

I was hired about a month after Oliver was, and we worked on Data Guardian together in Richardson. I can attest that he was an excellent developer, because I tested his code! Eventually he moved to Austin to help his grandmother, who was supposed to move in with him from out of state. She was blind, and he was updating his house with accessories like a shower bar and other modifications that a blind elderly woman might need. Honestly, I would’ve been put off as a young adult if I’d had to care for my grandmother, but it never bothered Oliver. That was the kind of loving, family-oriented person he was. I certainly missed him after he moved to Austin, and even more so after he left our group. It was so nice to see him when he came back to Richardson for a trip.

I had an opportunity to spend time and socialize with him at the Main Event where we played pool together. He was very surprised to see me play well, and he said I didn’t expect that you play pool this well 😊. This was pre-covid. The wanted that we go often and play pool. His loss is a great loss to everyone whom he used to surround. I offer my condolence to his family. May he rest in peace.

Oliver and I worked closer several times in our product. He was the dev lead on the client team, and I worked with him a lot of redefining some of the architectures and how to improve client performance. I was super impressed with his ability to grab concepts and present it in a concise way. He always has a way to tell complex things into simple key words. We did implement several of what Oliver suggested and the product in production is running with Oliver’s idea. We were also supposed to work on a Patent idea before he took off. He played a huge role in DTP Architecture before it became super famous within the Dell PG teams. Lot of great things from him on that Architecture.
We sat next to each other when we were in office and we used to talk various things like home fixing, home buying, etc. He helped me with one of my decision’s when I was debating to buy a home or not.
Whenever I think of Oliver, his smile is his trademark. Very compassionate guy gone too soon. May his Soul rest in peace. Oliver Ryan was one of the best co-workers I can think of. Very nicely dressed, focused on his work and solution oriented. When he used to get on a conference call with others, his approach to the solution for any problem was absolutely great.

Oliver and I started about the same time at Dell in 2015 we were cube mates, office mates and friends from the beginning, when he was in Richardson. We both worked on Dell Data Guardian, he was an amazing software engineer and definitely a go getter. He came up with some of the coding standards and code inspection standards that we continue to use on other projects. He helped move some our products to the cloud. Oliver was always willing to help and gave his opinion when needed. From a software security standpoint he was always on the ball making sure Dell Data Guardian was secure. From a personal standpoint I considered him a friend when in Richardson we were always going to lunch or going to a happy hour. I will miss being able to talk to him. The last time he was in Richardson we went to a happy hour and he said he brought a dog with him in the hotel. Not wanting to leave the dog at home by itself. Just the kind of guy he was, caring, and kind.

Oliver was our security champion. His passion for software security and ability to work closely with team members to get the most secure product out to the world is impressive. He will be terribly missed in the team. My deepest condolences to you and your family in this time of grief.

Oliver was a great friend. We had so much in common and our 1×1 meetings covered so many topics which meant that they would always go over time. I will miss those conversations…
As a software developer and security champion, Oliver made the overall team better. As Dell pushed to standardize and increase our level of security development processes, Oliver completely embraced this and became one of the Security Champions for the organization. He guided the organization on adopting several of the tools and processes. He created dashboards that were so thorough and were copied by other groups. Oliver was the example of what we wanted a Security Champion to be. In Q2 of 2020, Oliver was awarded the Security Champion Award by the Security and Resiliency Office (SRO).
As a friend, we talked about many topics but one of our favorite topics was real estate investing and fixing up houses. We shared ideas on finding the right investment property, spreadsheets that would predict the ROI, and different materials and techniques for fixing or updating a house. He told me how much he learned from his dad and this helped him acquire several properties at a young age to build up his portfolio. I told him that I wish my dad had done the same with me but that my kids will be very knowledgeable about real estate and would be very handy.
After my conversations with Oliver, I used to think how Oliver is what you would want your kid to grow up to be. Hard working, intelligent, versatile, friendly, well liked, well respected, financially astute, a leader, had a very bright future, and person that had a genuine heart that was filled with love and goodwill. His parents did such a good job raising him and I know that they must be so proud of him. I am proud to have had him as a friend.
Rest in peace, Oliver. I can’t wait to see you again.
Your friend,
– Raul Johnson
